Hi, i want to buy a laptop, i have one in mind called HCL (from India) with a Intel core 2 duo [1.5GHz] and there is another one from Compaq with AMD Athlon 64 X 2 dual core TK-55. Can someone please advise me for what processor to go with i.e should i go with the Intel core 2 duo or the AMD Athlon 64 x 2 processor. I will be using the laptop for wired and wireless networking, browsing the internet, programming, maybe play a few games not intensive graphics, play music, watch movies and maybe install RedHat Linux or Fedora. Thanks.
Intel Core 2 Duo is better.
Is it possible to use a Virtual Machine software of some sort to run Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora Core, Ubuntu, SUSE Linux, Sun Solaris(only one at a time on a Virtual machine) on a Win 2000 platform or is there any other better way. Also, can any of the mentioned platforms(Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora Core, Ubuntu, SUSE Linux and Sun Solaris) can be obtained without charge? I know some are commercial versions of Linux so may carry a fee while others may not.
I just have one computer to experiment with and it is not recent(Pentium 4 2.2GHz and 512M RAM). I just need to use the above UNIX flavors to become fairly comfortable in them.
I would appreciate any advice.
Thanks
ubuntu is free from www.ubuntulinux.org. when installed it will install grub (a boot loader) so it would turn your system into a dual boot. recommend getting an empty drive to install it on (or an empty partition) since windows wont recognize the Linux format but Linux will recognize windows somewhat. OR you can run ubuntu from the liveCD that the ISO download creates therefore you wouldn’t have to install anything but every time you reboot or restart you would loose all your system settings.
I installed GRUB and Fedora Core 8 on my Dell Dimension v400c [The old one]. Now when I boot it it just says GRUB on the screen and hangs there. When I press a key, it beeps. Nothing happens. Ever. I left it for 2 days and nothing happened.

( why mess about with "dual boot" run os as an app. ) switch effortlessly between two.
I am using a Linux server in command mode, i dont know which linux i am using ie whether it is Fedora Core 1,2,3 or Redh Hat linux Enterpirse or Linux 9.0 Version??
username@machine> uname -a
Linux test_machine1 2.4.21-4.ELsmp #1 SMP Fri Oct 3 17:52:56 EDT 2003 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
In this example, the Linux kernel version is 2.4.21-4.
To obtain the Linux glibc version, type the following at the shell command prompt:
username@machine> rpm -q glibc
glibc-2.3.2-95.3
Two alternative methods to obtain glibc version information:
username@machine> /lib/libc.so.6 | head -1
GNU C Library stable release version 2.3.2, by Roland McGrath et al.
username@machine> getconf GNU_LIBC_VERSION
glibc 2.3.2
If you are using a RedHat Linux distribution, you can find the RedHat release by typing:
usename@machine> cat /etc/redhat-release
Red Hat Linux release 9 (Shrike)
I hear all this buz, and I’m so confused. So I have a few questions about it!
1.Why is Linux Fedora Core free firs of all if it’s so great?
2. How come it looks so cool on youtube, even better then Windows Vista, but people still don’t know much about it?
3. Does it run with all the programs that windows can run with?
4. If it’s so great, why do people still pay Windows when they can get Linux Fedora Core for free?
5. Now the truth, what is the bad side of Linux Fedora Core?
Thank you all!
What is Fedora?
Fedora is a ?Linux-based operating system that provides users with access to the latest free and open source software, in a stable, secure and easy to manage form. We strongly believe in the bedrock principles that created all the components of our operating system, and because of this we guarantee that Fedora will always be free for anybody, anywhere, to use, modify and distribute.
Fedora has long been a center for innovation in free and open source software and places high emphasis on creating a community where developers and open source enthusiasts come together to advance free and open source software. The Fedora community contributes everything it builds back to the free and open source world and continues to make advances of significance to the broader community, as evidenced by the regular and rapid incorporation of its features into other Linux distributions.
Fedora is more than just software, though. It is a community of contributors from around the world who work with each other to advance the interests of the free culture movement. Everyone is invited to join, and no matter what your skills are, we have a place for you in our community! The Fedora community includes software engineers, artists, system administrators, web designers, writers, speakers, and translators — all of whom will be happy to help you get started.
What makes Fedora different?
We try to always do the right thing, and provide only free and open source software. We will fight to protect and promote solutions that anyone can use and redistribute. With this in mind, all of our developers are focused on working closely with upstream , so everyone can benefit from our work and get access to our changes as soon as possible. Due to the huge amount of innovation that Fedora drives, this focus has had significant and long lasting effects. Some of the recent developments in free and open source software that Fedora has driven include:
* NetworkManager
* D-Bus
* PolicyKit
* PackageKit
* HAL
* FreeIPA
* SELinux
* PulseAudio
The reverse is also true: by sticking close to upstream development teams, Fedora often gets the latest software before anybody else. Not only does this benefit our community, but it also benefits the upstream teams by providing a much larger audience and more feedback for them.
Another striking difference of Fedora is our goal to empower others to pursue their vision of what a free operating system should be like. Fedora now forms the basis for derivative distributions such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux , the One Laptop Per Child XO and Creative Commons’ Live Content DVDs.
And that’s not all. It is just as easy for individuals to create their own distribution, thanks to Fedora’s easy spinning tools . These tools allow you to quickly select the packages you want, and create a live CD or installation disc. Some official versions of Fedora have grown up this way, including:
* Fedora Electronic Lab
* Fedora Xfce Spin
* Fedora Developers Spin
* Fedora Games Spin
How do I get Fedora?
Easy, just visit this page and download it. You can try it without installing anything on your computer, thanks to our Live images on CD or USB – in fact, you can even create a Live USB stick from within Windows !
If you have a slow internet connection, or no internet connection at all, then you can still get Fedora thanks to our volunteer Free Media program.
How do I join Fedora?
Like what you see and want to help out? That’s easy too! This page has all the information you need, and don’t forget that all our contributors get access to some awesome tools to help them get their work done:
* Fedora People provides free webspace for hosting Fedora related content
* Fedora Planet is an aggregation of contributor blogs so you can see what everyone is up to
* Fedora Hosted is the perfect location for hosting your free and open source projects
* Fedora’s own Gobby server , so we can collaboratively work on documents in real time
* Fedora Build System to build your software across multiple architectures
* The skills and experience of hundreds of fellow Fedora contributors!
Does anyone know how to install screenlets on Fedora Core 9 (i386)
I got the FC9 RPM from the screenlets website but can’t satisfy any of the dependencies
[root@mypc screenlets]# rpm -Uvh screenlets-0.1.2-13.1.i386.rpm
warning: screenlets-0.1.2-13.1.i386.rpm: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID d0978e40
error: Failed dependencies:
gnome-python-desktop is needed by screenlets-0.1.2-13.1.i386
python-gnome is needed by screenlets-0.1.2-13.1.i386
python-gnome-extras is needed by screenlets-0.1.2-13.1.i386
python-gtk is needed by screenlets-0.1.2-13.1.i386
You must install the python dependencies before you install screenlets. Ensure that you are in the sudo list or use root and open up Terminal.
If you have Yum installed then you can issue something like (all one line):
yum install gnome-python-desktop python-gnome python-gnome-extras python-gtk
So it might look like this within Terminal:
root@somehost#>yum install gnome-python-desktop python-gnome python-gnome-extras python-gtk
And allow them to install. Any other dependency that those dependencies require must be installed as well and you can use yum to install them accordingly.
Good luck.
I had linux on my system and now i have installed windows too
problem is now no boot options of linux r coming instead windows boots normally.My linux is Fedora Core 2
Download a program called BootUS. If you didnt dump the original partition and you created a second partition for windows, this software will find them, set up the boot selection screen, and allow you to choose any boot sequence you desire.
