Kernel News and How To

ok so i installed Fedora Core 3 only to find out i didn’t really like it that much. the reason why is because it uses shadow video mode from the bios which means a tiny screen. also i can’t use my linksys wireless card. now for some reason my cd drive doesn’t work. i can’t load up hirens boot cd or any windows installation disk or even kanotix. so i was thinking maybe my cd rom drive has failed. if so there must be a software utility that exist that will let me install an operating system from a USB DVD Rom Drive. i just need a little help. any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks

Just install a new internal DVD ROM drive if its broke.

Most computers can’t boot from USB check your computers specks to see if yours can.

If you have a firewire (IEEE 1394) port you can get a Firewire external DVD burner that you can boot from though.

this is what i get after finishing the set up(Pre-Installation)procedure and commanding :runInstaller

Is there anyspecial feature that i should take into account because of using fedora core 6?

Perhaps you don’t have the right Linux-release file in your /etc.
Usually if you use RHEL you can see this file /etc/redhat-release, for suse it’s /etc/SuSE-release. If you can find something like /etc/fedora-release and rename it to something else, then create another file called redhat-release. Then you must fill what version of Red Hat you want. Like Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 3 (Taroon). Then it should be OK I think..

I installed Fedora Core 5 on my Playstation 3 today. When I get to the part where I login I type in "root". After that I do "startx". I then get a black screen and no Fedora splash screen. I am new to this. Am I missing a step?

Good luck.

why we need this plugins?
and where we use this plugins…
please give information about this topic…

Fedora is MSLinux, it is also Mac Happy, kinda neato. But I could venture a guess and say that the plugins are for WinMed Codecs. Binary Drivers and other DRM stuff. One has to protect themselves from themselves. I guess. I am still very confused about MicroLinux deal and the stuff that is going on in real time. First they buy 10% of Apple now they *buy* /cough\ a Linux Distro.
I Ubuntu.

I allready have Fedora Core 3 installed on my PC w/ a 768 mb swap, 100mb /boot and approx 16.8gb for /.
I want to keep Fedora Core 3 on my computer and install Linspire too…

can you duel boot? partition the HDD & then have seperaste o/s on each partition.

I have winxp & linspire 5-0 running on 1 pc.

I have downloaded the proper rpm of Mplayer for FC3 , but when I am going to install , it returns a message that a file named some thing like liblame.so is required. I can’t find that file.Plzz help me.

In your RPM manager (i hope u have one), find the installed packages and see if the library that it needs was installed.
An easier option is to install VLC Media player. It plays almost anything – and the installation does not depend much on existing libraries.
Download here for Fedora Core 3.

There are no drivers by HP itself for linux with the 1020 printer, however there is always a way :) so here it is download this driver developed for the Minolta magicolor 2300 DL network color laser printer; It is possible that this driver will also work for the HP LaserJet 1000, 1005, 1020 and other Zenographics-based printers, but the author cannot test this. just click on the link below:
